Consulate Roundtable
Senator for Victoria, David Van, will today chair a diplomatic roundtable teleconference, attended by consul-generals representing over 40 countries.
Senator Van said the roundtable will focus on international development and how as an international community we can work together to foster greater economic recovery amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Senator Van has held a quarterly roundtable with the Victorian Consulate Corps since being elected last year, providing an opportunity for the diplomatic representatives to have direct dialogue with the Senator and Australian Government ministers on issues of mutual importance.
“It is great to see that the number of participating countries is increasing with over 40 countries to be represented at this roundtable,” Senator Van said.
Australian Minster for International Development and the Pacific, Hon Alex Hawke MP will be the guest of honour to provide a briefing on Australia’s international development efforts and COVID-19 support.
Senator Van said, “It is much appreciated to have Minister Hawke make himself available for the consular-corps and share his knowledge of how Australia has stepped up in the region.”
“Australia has continued to step up as an international partner during these uncertain times and its’ great to hear from the Minister about our efforts in supporting regional countries during this challenging time.”
Senator Van will also lead discussions on the response to COVID-19 across Victoria’s diaspora communities—including the challenges they are facing and how they may contribute to Australia’s and the region’s economic recovery.
